The Fuller Project is the award-winning global nonprofit newsroom dedicated to groundbreaking reporting on women, to raise awareness, expose injustice and spur accountability. 


Our reporters in the US and around the globe rigorously report on untold stories and the interconnected issues affecting women and their communities everywhere. Our reporting often leads the news cycle and is published in prominent outlets, bringing the full story to a large and diverse audience.


Since 2015, our team has published hundreds of articles and reached millions of readers. In 2020 alone, we reported on stories such as: a series on childcare issues affecting working mothers during Covid-19, the pandemic exacerbating the crisis in Black maternal mortality in Wisconsin, intimate partner violence faced by Indigenous communities and compounding systemic barriers to voting, and Black women mobilizing to vote in the recent elections.


About the role

The Deputy Editor is a crucial member of our editorial team and will report to the Editor in Chief to manage and edit core US news coverage around issues that affect women, support newsroom hiring, build processes to help manage the newsroom and coordinate with other departments, and run complex reporting projects. The Deputy Editor will also work alongside other editors to carry out the Editor in Chief’s editorial vision, run editorial meetings, and manage other day-to-day responsibilities.


The Deputy Editor is an experienced editor who has managed a newsroom or a team of full-time staff and freelancers. The Deputy Editor will enter our newsroom during a period of significant growth and will be integral in helping us build a team of journalists across the country. 


The ideal candidate shares a passion for our mission, is someone who is excited to roll up their sleeves and build, has a track record of managing and editing others, enjoys mentoring and developing reporters, and sees trends and can identify stories for longer-range coverage. A focus on impact and a collaborative orientation is essential. Ideal candidates will also have the following background and skills:


  • Deep understanding of the US news cycle and coverage of topics such as: social justice, Covid-19, US policies that affect women
  • Ability to apply that understanding to women and communities often left out of the mainstream narrative 
  • Experience hiring reporters with a focus on diversity and inclusion  
  • Experience managing journalists of varying levels, leading editorial meetings, and guiding others to meet assignment goals and see their reporting from a deeper angle 
  • Ability to juggle many priorities and is an expert people manager, budget manager, and partner manager
  • Eye for evaluating pitches and editing stories, asking key questions: “Whose voice is missing from the conversation? What is the historical or systemic context surrounding this issue? How can we go deeper?”
  • Willingness to receive and act on feedback and be edited by peers 
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and work independently in a low structure environment 
  • Understanding of a nonprofit newsroom, including working with business-side functions such as development and communications
  • Passionate for and demonstrated commitment to the mission and core values of The Fuller Project
  • Ability to work productively in a independent, non-partisan environment, guided by journalism ethics


This position can work remotely from anywhere in the US. Data and investigative editorial experience is not necessary but is considered a plus.
